Y Does My Dog Keep Throwing Up



The following is part of the book "Life in muted" by David Lodge. The author, real Lodge, lost hearing and told through a character, a retired professor with a frankness and clarity. In this paragraph the person celebrates Christmas at home and discovers that he has run out of batteries. Come and read:

"That morning, twenty minutes before the first guests arrived, the two hearing aid batteries ran out simultaneously, something rarer. He warned that one no longer worked when he took to understand something that Jacki was saying in the kitchen (...), and before he had time to replace it in the bustle of preparations for the party, the other left atrial working. It was the drawer of his office, where he keeps all accessories for your hearing, found that, contrary to their expectations entrusted, did not contain batteries. Or to be more beautiful, had batteries in the drawer, but they were the right size for the headset. In fact, the only alternative is to try to spend the holiday without a hearing aid.
When you hear what people are saying you have two options: either you keep quiet and nod and murmur and smile, pretending to hear what your partner is saying and inserting a few words of agreement, but always with the risk of taking the by radish leaves, with potentially embarrassing, or take the initiative, bypassing normal rule of waiting your turn to talk and talk non-stop on a topic of your choice without allowing asset target the person with whom you speak, and therefore the problem is not to listen and understand what you are saying.
