However, there is a difference, not always established or understood, between language and vocabulary.
The language is acquired, is an innate biological capacity in man. The vocabulary is learned.

In all cases, the word peak is the same, none of the four graphemes change. But the context and syntax tells us that in every sentence has a different meaning. And we need the grammar, the world's knowledge, experience, to reveal each.
We, deaf and hard of hearing postlingual understand the above. And I say us because hardly a prelingual deaf read this blog. But ... How do we continue to learn vocabulary without listening to the casual conversations around us, radio, TV, lectures, etc, etc?
Reading is a great ally in this matter. But it is impossible to pass to the road everything is said. And there is no magazine that talks to regain the street. What is said in line at the supermarket, bank, what teens say, what they talk about kids in a plaza. There is new vocabulary. That is their proving ground. From there emerges and spreads.
In my case, I discovered that there was a huge large number of definitions for the sex (I write and will not appear on Internet searches), and in particular for sexoora l.
Of course, that vocabulary is not in the books. Not in the newspapers. Not added to the dictionaries. Is created between people and between people runs quietly. And I, his voice low, do not listen.
"Wash the car", "make a Pete," "Peter" were words that I discovered by accident and I had to go ask what they meant. Now I know, of course. But I wonder how many words or sayings escape me daily. And, as a writer, I find it problematic case.

And so I go through life, trying to fish with a very small huge fish that pass by my side without me noticing.
I wonder if as the years go go away in a vocabulary familiar but archaic, as happens to people who speak as profoundly deaf heard about as children.

I wonder how I shall not speak of what my kids and their friends in a few years, and whether they will realize how much I do not understand.
But luckily I continued these questions. And while maintaining the curiosity and desire to know everything I hope to continue finding out about what they do not want to know.
